Iris (Fleur-de-Lis)

The National Flower of France

Iris, known as the Fleur-de-Lis, is one of France's most recognizable symbols. For a very long time it has not only represented the French identity, but also purity, light and royalty. You see it in architecture, art and on coats of arms. A symbol of the French monarchy. It is not officially the national flower, but we have included it as such because of the historical and symbolic importance it has carried for many decades in French history.

Why it's important: 

The Fleur-de-Lis' strong symbolism and very long history have made it a part of the French identity,

Lavender

You have undoubtedly seen these purple fields of lavender on TV or in pictures. The purple fields of Provence are famous all over the world, and rightly so. Lavender symbolizes tranquility, purity, healing and has become a symbol of the south of France. Its scent has been used in oils, soaps, perfumes and even medicine. The lavender fields of Provence play a major role in both tourism and French identity.

Why it's important:  

It has a great importance in both the perfume industry and tourism in the south of France.

Lily

It is often mistaken for the lily to symbolize (Fleur-de-Lis). We can't blame them since it also resembles the symbol, but that is wrong. We can at least say that the white lily has a deep symbolic meaning in French culture and is deeply associated with the Virgin Mary. Otherwise, the lily symbolizes innocence, spiritual purity, and refined beauty. You often find the lily at funerals and religious art.

Why it's important:   

Its religious symbolism and beautiful exterior have made it deeply rooted in French culture.

Rose

Roses, a classic all over the world. But in France, it has a very important role in the world's perfume capital, Grasse and is also a common ingredient in skin care. Roses are in France, just like in the rest of the world, associated with beauty, romance and love. But we think it fits especially well because of the capital of love, Paris. Roses are a very common flower in French gardens.

Why it's important:    

Its role in the perfume industry and its very beautiful appearance make it a perfect match in the country where you will find the capital of romance.

Poppy

After the First World War, the red poppy became a strong symbol of peace, remembrance, hope and respect for the soldiers who died in war. You will find large fields of poppies in northern France where battles have been fought. (This is because poppies can lie dormant for a very long time and can start to bloom if disturbed, which they were during the war). The red poppy is still used today at memorial ceremonies.

Why it's important:     

Their symbolism after the First World War has made them a very important reminder of the tough times France has gone through, and has given the French people and the world hope.
